CCSD School Nutrition Wins Top State Awards

CCSD School Nutrition Wins Top State Awards

Executive Director Tina Farmer, third from left, recently accepted the award on behalf of CCSD School Nutrition from State Superintendent of Schools Richard Woods; Holly Thaw, assistant director for GaDOE School Nutrition Division, and Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tyler Harper.

The Cherokee County School District has again earned a top state honor for serving farm-fresh meals to students!

CCSD’s School Nutrition program, which serves 5 million meals annually, won the Georgia Farm to School Award from the Georgia Department of Education School Nutrition Division.  CCSD School Nutrition has earned the award every year since the program was established in 2014.  Only 52 of Georgia’s 159 school districts received the award this fall.  The department additionally earned GaDOE’s Standard of Excellence Award for Student and Community Engagement and Quality Meals.  Congratulations to our School Nutrition professionals and thank you to our School Board for its longtime support of the program to ensure our students learn more, grow more, and achieve more in our schools than they could anywhere else!

Tina Farmer serves as executive director for CCSD School Nutrition and procurement, and her School Nutrition leadership team is made up of supervisor Toni Hedges, coordinators Mark Johnson and Trang Pham and culinary specialist Jessica Emmett.

The Georgia Farm to School Award honors school nutrition programs that excel in providing fresh, locally grown produce and ingredients in meals; promoting the importance of farm to school food sourcing; and participating in school garden projects.  The award was developed by the GaDOE School Nutrition Division, Georgia Department of Agriculture, University of Georgia Extension and Georgia Department of Public Health.  Standard of Excellence Awards are presented by the GaDOE School Nutrition Division based on documentation and observation of the highest standards in honored school systems.
